President's Newsletter September 2009

(September 06, 2009)
As I write this, our season has but two weekends remaining with our prize giving on the last game day September 12th.
Mini Soccer Grades 5/6 & 7 at Morland Fox Park, Devon Street, Greerton immediately after the games are finished at 9 a.m. approximately.
All other grades are at Pemberton Park, Fraser Street, Greerton, at the following times.
Grades 8, 9 & 10 at 12.30 p.m.
Grades 11 & 12/13 at 2.00 p.m.
Please note Prize Giving will not be cancelled because of inclement weather.

2009 has been a busy and successful year.  The preseason “shakedown tournament” for Grades 8 to 10 in early May was well supported and some great football was played.

On Sunday 9th August our annual 11th Grade Vincent Green tournament was held at Pemberton Park with 19 teams competing, including nine from Auckland, one each from Hamilton, and Rotorua plus the best teams from our local competition.  We had a perfect weather day and the football started at 9am with prize giving over by 4pm – quite a day with some very classy teams on display.  This year the tournament broke into trophy and plate competitions after the initial pool play with both 1st, 2nd and 3rd place getters receiving medals.  The day was received enthusiastically with teams congratulating the club on their organisation and pledging to return in 2010.

Our Blue Rovers 11th Grade Div1 team the Bulldogs won the Whakatane tournament in June beating the strong Mount Hearts team in the final.  At the time of writing the Bulldogs have locked in second place in the Div1 competition which is a great result.

Other teams have experienced mixed fortunes and the strength of competition in particularly the Div1 tables has been high.

As the season draws to a close the selection process for next years teams has already begun and dates are in place for Term 4 five a side Summer Soccer, preseason training commencing mid February, our second 4v4 Fun Day again in mid February, registrations in the last two weeks of February followed by trials and 2010 teams selection – phew, it really never stops!

May I end this letter by thanking all those parents who have pitched in to make our club run so well, our coaches, managers, parent referees, BBQ helpers, transport providers, vocal supporters, as well as those who serve on the committee.  It is pertinent to add that our AGM comes up in November and with two committee members leaving the club as their children move onto college we will be looking for some community minded folk who are willing to give up a little of their time to ensure our club continues to provide a great environment for their children and friends to play football for.

Finally, to all the children who have played for Blue Rovers this season, I hope you have had a great year, made some good friends, played some fantastic games and enjoyed some exciting results.  We look forward to seeing you back and don’t forget to take the opportunities that will be in place to keep your skills honed over the “off” season.
