Vincent Green Tournament

It was the 40th Anniversary of the Grade 11 Vincent Green Tournament held on 7 August 2011 at Pemberton Park, Tauranga. The weather was worse than the predicted forecast as every rain shower brought a noticeable temperature drop and strong winds. This left the players, referees, officials & spectators alike wet, freezing & seeking shelter. However in spite of the inclement weather there was skilful football on display by all teams present & the games were played competively but with good sportsmanship & spirit. It was a credit to all players, coaches, managers & supporters that despite the weather conditions they remained upbeat & positive.

On the day all 10 pool games were played. Unfortunately 4 of the 8 teams that qualified for the plate quarter finals decided to default which meant the remaining 4 teams went straight through to the semi-finals. At this stage another team defaulted which left us with 3 teams competing for 1st, 2nd & 3rd places.

In the cup all 8 teams remained to compete in the quarter finals, then 4 teams in the semi-finals, but 1 team defaulted in the finals rather than play for 3rd or 4th place. However because of the weather we presented both 3rd placed teams in the cup & plate their medals before the other teams finished their games so the players could go home, change out of wet clothes & finally warm up!

We must thank all those who assisted on the day as without them the tournament would not have been the success it was. Special thanks must go the BOP Referees Assoc for all the qualified referees who attended to referee games, run lines & assist the newer referees. Their support during the day regardless of whether they stayed all day or half a day was instrumental to the tournaments success. Plus all club members who assisted with setup, clean up, administrative duties, refereeing, linesman & runners your contribution was invaluable & very much appreciated. It was mentioned many times by those present that this was a well organised & run tournament which is a credit to you all.

We would also like to thank our sponsors McDonalds for supplying vouchers for the entered & winning teams, L J Hooker for the use of their marquee & Otumoetai Football Club for their loan of equipment. It is possible the cold weather created more work for both the “Coffee Guy” & senior ladies who were manning the barbeque so thank you for keeping up with the demand.

The new trophy case was a great success showing the history of the tournament to all who perused it. Plus it was wonderful to see Life Members attend, these included Denise Miller, who has a grandson playing for the club, Denis Stevens & his wife Joan & lastly but still most importantly Mrs Green with her daughters, granddaughter & great granddaughter. Long may such a tradition continue.

So again thank you one and all for making the day such a huge success!

Vincent Green 11th Grade Tournament

Pemberton Park Greerton 7 August 2011

Hi to all coaches and teams participating in our tournament,

A big thank you to all who are supporting this event and particularly to those travelling some considerable distance to participate. This year we have teams from Auckland, Cambridge, Hamilton, Rotorua and Whakatane in addition to the Bay of Plenty teams. There are 19 teams entered which means the pool play is longer but, weather allowing, all teams will go home after a full on day of football.

There will be four round-robin games of 20 minutes in pool play. The lowest placed team in each Pool will be eliminated with the top two teams moving into the Cup (Shield) competition and the third and fourth placed teams into the Plate competition.

There will be elimination quarter then semi-finals for the Cup and Plate sections. Beaten semi finalists will play off for the third place medals. All these games will be 10 minutes each way with penalty shootouts deciding any tied games.

Finals will be 15 minutes each way. Penalty shootout will apply if finalists are tied after 30 minutes play.

The club will provide qualified CBR & Level 1 referees and assistant referees to control all games. The referee’s decisions will be final and binding.

Pemberton Park is situated between Fraser Street, Yatton Street and Pemberton Crescent. There is ample parking on the streets surrounding the park. There is a small car park off Yatton Street adjacent to Pitches 2 & 3. Pemberton Crescent gives access to Pitch 4.

The park has four pitches:-

  • One 11th Grade 70m x 50m with goal size 5.5m x 2.2m (Pitch 4)

  • Two 12th Grade 85m x 50m with full size 7m x 2.2m goals (Pitches 2 & 3)

  • We will be using half the full sized No1 pitch, 75m x 50m with 5.5m x 2.2m portable goals.

The draw will move teams around the different pitches so no team is disadvantaged by playing all pool games on a larger pitch with larger goals. The variable pitch and goal size is a bit of a compromise but has worked well previously and the players will enjoy plenty of space and there should be no shortage of goals scored.

There will be room on the unused half of the No1 pitch as well as between the No1 and 4 pitches for team marquees to be pitched. The registration tent will be placed centrally between Pitches 1 & 4 also. Meredith Hall is adjacent to Pitch 1 which also house toilet facilities. The results board will be situated in the Registrations Tent.

There will be a sausage & hamburger BBQ plus cold drinks and sweets. The Coffee Cart is on site all day as will be a dedicated First Aid station. We will have a chilly bin of ice at the registration tent for any teams requiring ice for injured players.

Greerton shopping precinct is approx 2 minutes drive away with several fast food outlets including Subway and McDonalds.

Please – no alcohol is to be brought onto the park.

The draw will be forwarded to all teams by email.  Download your copy here.

If weather dictates cancellation of the tournament, this will be emailed to all teams & posted on our club website www.blueroversjfc.co.nz after 5pm Saturday 6th as there are several teams travelling. Please check our website if in any doubt about the weather.

Please could teams bring alternate strip with them. There is the possibility that there may be teams playing in similar strips.

We look forward to hosting you for what promises to be an exciting day of junior football with a wealth of talent on display.

Travel safely and we look forward to meeting you.

 Regards

 Garry Ball

I have attached the city council’s aerial map of Pemberton Park and used artistic license to outline and number the 4 playing pitches, the clubrooms “Meredith Hall” and the layout of registration, food, and marquee pitching areas.
